Caxton Works / Royal Gateway Update

The Caxton Works entrance arch between two residential tower blocks in Canning Town, under a clear blue sky

Update: 2 November 2026

Council tax and business rates exemption confirmed

Following our call for a freeze, the council’s Head of Revenues and Finance Transactional Services has confirmed that the affected properties will be exempt from both council tax and business rates (NNDR). The exemption applies while the properties are prohibited by law from being occupied and the prohibition notice remains in place.

Help for nursery families

The council’s Early Years team is contacting parents to help find alternative childcare places for children affected by the nursery’s closure.

Space for affected businesses

Your local councillors have contacted Brunel Street Works and Hallsville Quarter about space for businesses that have had to close. Brunel Street Works has confirmed it has units available.

If your business has been affected, please get in touch with Cllr John Morris or Cllr Rohit Dasgupta for further details:

For support contacts and the latest official information, see the council’s page.

Original update: 31 October 2026

Prime Property Management has told residents of Centurion Tower, St Vincent Court, Sovereign Tower, Thanet Tower and Prince Court to leave their homes because of structural safety concerns. The first three blocks were evacuated on 23 October and the other two on 30 October. Do not return to your home until further notice.

Newham Council is supporting residents. For the latest official information, see the council’s page.

Where to get help

What are your local councillors doing?

  • Asking for the roads around Caxton Works to be closed.
  • Calling for a freeze on council tax and business rates for affected residents and businesses.
  • Asking James Asser MP to press mortgage lenders to freeze payments until this is resolved.
  • Working with the MP to pressure the developer to provide accommodation and further support.
  • Asking the council to find an alternative venue for the nursery.

This page will be updated as more information becomes available.
